Champions Online, or, "Farewell real world!"
Posted by Solomon Sep 21, 2009, 11:57
I've got my grubby hands on an install disk for Champions Online. My new PC will be ready by thursday. My social life's going to grind to a complete halt very soon.

So how is your life as super hero?

So far I heard very mixed things about the game.
Mainly that while it was quite pretty to look at it lacked substance in the gameplay department.

Well, the computer shop messed up my order, so I'm still waiting for my new machine.

I've only seen my friends play so far. The game is, indeed, high-sugar eye candy. The character editing engine alone looks like something I could spend days on. More on this when I'll actually get to play the thing.

New machine?
Sweet!

What kind of beast are you getting your self?

Come on man this is the time to brag about your new silicon!

He's gotten Alienware's new MEGAMONSTROX desktop. It's late because you need your own 3,000MW hydroelectric power plant in order to run it, and getting the environmental licences for those is a pain in the ass.

... by the way, don't you fellows in Carioca-land have a ethanol-powered version that won't start when it's below +25 degrees outside? [;)]

My new silicon puppy, christened "Wonderboy", is an Intel E8400 with 2x2GB RAM. So far I've only managed to sporadically play Champions Online since I've been busy with a couple other, more serious, projects.
The game's relatively simple (compared to WoW) and action-oriented, you don't have to sink time on crap like farming and daily quests, OTOH you'll plow through the available quests rather quickly. The game does look like it was rushed through, there's still a bit of bugs and balance issues and not enough gameable content, though it's improving. The tutorial is quite nice in that it puts you in charge of repelling an alien invasion right from the start and unlocks your character's features over a few hours of actual play. Computerized heroics have surely gone a long road since you had to pray your characters could beat that 1st level mouse in Moria! The best feature is definitely the character editor, you could spend hours fiddling with your hero's appearance (you even get multiple costumes).

One of the most interesting features of this game is the ability to create your own Nemesis, an arch-enemy that will crop up from time to time to harass your hero. Now it's time for me to do it, and I'm drawing a blank.

My character is Night Phantom, sort of a Spirit/Shadow/Sandman homage. Back in the 30s, he was a muckraking reporter. After uncovering evidence of ties between organized crime, spy rings and some city notables, he was marked for death. Clobbered senseless and left to die in a burning warehouse so as to simulate an accident, he gained enhanced metabolism from the fumes of strange buning chemicals, which allowed him to survive and adopt his new crimefighting identity.

So, what Nemesis might such a character have? Being a Pulp homage, I was thinking some Nazi. You can't really go wrong with Nazi villains. Maybe a cyborg Nazi or a Thule Society sorcerer. Any suggestions?

A Nazi cyborg arch enemy is never wrong!

Or you can build him on Gary Oldman's Jean Baptist Emanuel Zorg from "Fift Element" [grin]
